Internship: Clean Room Data Engineer

Department of Electrical Engineering - Photonic Integration Group

Expected start: 1 November 2026

Duration: 6 months (4 – 8 hours per week)

Location: Eindhoven University of Technology

Working hours and internship compensation: Paid, part-time; details to be confirmed

About the project

The Photonic Integration (PhI) Group at Eindhoven University of Technology develops indium phosphide photonic integration technologies together with NanoLab@TU/e and external technology partners.

This project aims to establish reliable data flow between semiconductor process and metrology tools and the PhI data infrastructure. You will investigate what data are available, how they can be accessed, structured and stored, and how this can support a high-level data architecture linking epitaxy, metrology and wafer-scale device testing. The longer-term vision is a more connected digital representation of cleanroom processes.

Internship activities

Under the supervision of a postdoctoral researcher from the Photonic Integration Group, you will work with input from relevant NanoLab specialists, process engineers and researchers to:

· Understand and map selected tool-data sources and assess data types (e.g. recipes/configuration, sensor/time-series and event/log data), expected volumes, update rates, access routes and constraints.

· Investigate tool communication and data access through exported files, databases, APIs, network interfaces or tool-specific communication protocols.

· Use Python to prototype data retrieval, structuring and transfer to the PhI/TU/e data infrastructure, including simple interfaces or APIs where appropriate.

· Help define mappings between tool-specific data fields and a common tool-data and metadata framework.

· Validate completeness, consistency, timestamps and traceability, document the workflow, and where feasible demonstrate it on a selected tool or representative data source.

The role focuses on data acquisition and integration, with exposure to semiconductor fabrication and metrology workflows through interaction with NanoLab tool owners and process engineers. Previous cleanroom experience is not required.

Learning and experience

You will work at the interface of software, semiconductor manufacturing and photonic technology, using real equipment data, while gaining experience with research equipment interfaces, semiconductor process data and multidisciplinary research exposure. You will also gain exposure to industry-standard data-engineering and system-integration practices, and experience working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers and technical specialists.

Job requirements

We are looking for a Bachelor’s or Master’s students from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Data Science, Applied Physics or related disciplines.

You should have:

· Practical programming experience in Python.

· An interest in data acquisition, software/data systems, semiconductor technology or related research.

· A structured approach to problem solving and willingness to learn across disciplines.

Previous photonics, semiconductor or cleanroom experience is welcome but not required.

What we offer

· A paid, part-time internship of approximately six months in a photonic-integration research environment.

· Exposure to photonics, semiconductor processing, metrology and data infrastructure, with opportunities to learn from specialists in these areas.

Information and application

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a short motivation describing their interest and relevant programming experience. A software-project or Git repository link is welcome where available.
